In India, the SUV market is gradually becoming robust in terms of lifestyle SUVs. Many people, instead of hatchback models, are showing strong affection towards these types of cars. In this segment, two well-known models are Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Mahindra Thar. However, in terms of sales, Jimny has outpaced Thar by a significant margin.Jimny’s sales figures in January, has raised concern for Maruti Suzuki.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Mahindra Thar: Which One Is More Popular
In the international market, Maruti Suzuki Jimny is one of the company’s most popular models.Considering its popularity, Maruti Suzuki launched the car in Indian market in 2023, anticipating that it would give a tough competition to Thar. However, the reality turned out differently. In January 2024, Jimny sold a total of 163 units, while Thar surpassed it by selling over 6,000 models.This has left Maruti Suzuki a little bit of disappointed.
Mahindra Thar was first launched in 2020 and was able to make a significant impact on the market right from the start. Due to its immense popularity, there was a long waiting period as well. Statistics show that, Thar sold 5,793 units in December last year , but in January this year, it increased its own sales record, reaching 6,059 units.
On the other hand, in August 2023, Jimny sold a total of 3,104 units in India. However, a month later, in September, its sales declined to 2,651 units. In October, November, and December, the sales figures stood at 1,852, 1,020, and 730 units, respectively.Currently, Maruti Suzuki Jimny is sold through the brand’s premium dealer network, NEXA. Its price starts from ₹12.74 lakhs and goes up to ₹14.79 lakhs (ex-showroom). However, in December 2023, Suzuki launched the most affordable variant of Jimny, priced at ₹10.74 lakhs (ex-showroom).
Whereas, to buy the rear-wheel-drive model of Mahindra Thar, one has to spend ₹11.25 lakhs (ex-showroom). The top-end model is priced at ₹17.20 lakhs (ex-showroom), which comes with automatic transmission and a diesel engine.
